Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
